The RESQIUM’26 Disaster Awareness Summit, organised by Maltepe University Search and Rescue Club, was attended by students from our School of Civil Defence and Firefighting programme. The summit, which was held to raise awareness of disasters and encourage practical training, attracted a large audience and featured a wide range of content.
The programme was opened by Istanbul Deputy Governor Mahmut Hersanlıoğlu, Maltepe District Governor Bekir Tiryaki, Maltepe University Rector Prof. Dr. Edibe Sezen Çetintaş, Maltepe University Board of Trustees and Istanbul AFAD Director Haluk Sözener.
The summit included a total of four sessions featuring experts in the field. These covered important topics such as disaster management, search and rescue techniques, crisis coordination and volunteering activities. Participants had the opportunity to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge.
Throughout the event, a stand area was set up on the campus where public institutions, civil society organisations and universities were present. The stands provided information on disaster awareness and introduced the institutions' activities and equipment.
One of the most notable sections of the summit was the two-stage competition. In the parkour and tent pitching categories, our Firefighting team performed exceptionally well, winning the championship.
This success highlights the strength of our School's Civil Defence and Firefighting Programme's practical training and the students' expertise in preparing for disasters.
The summit provided participants with valuable insights into disaster preparedness and offered students a valuable opportunity for both competition and experience.
